“Habitual Stress EP”
by
Pendle Coven
“Habitual Stress” on the a-side here is perhaps Pendle’s most relentless club builder to date, everything about it evokes the darkest, most demented club space you’ve ever occupied, a cavernous resonance and a squashed acid signature guiding you into the nether regions of the night with vigour and abandon. It sounds like vintage Chicago warehouse music minced through the contemporary sounds of Berlin, Detroit and the Hague – and it’s just absolutely crushing. “Brick Tutor” on the flip is, by contrast, a more velveteen affair : padded kick-drums and washed-out strings align themselves around crisp snares and a 6am vibe, the sort of track that you’d find on labels like Mojuba, Styrax or Meanwhile, except with a filthier edge, once again exposing another side to pendle coven’s forever changing face.
